Wei Jingsheng: On the Issue of Democracy and Taiwan, Chinese Government Slaps Its Own Face

Wei Jingsheng, who came to Europe to attend the China Road International Symposium, accepted this reporter's special interview after the closing of the symposium.

The China Road Research Association that is registered by Chinese and dissidents headquartered in Europe has been holding an International Symposium for three consecutive years after the establishment of the association. Scholars and experts of various countries attend the symposia. Attendees have included the well-known French Sino-expert Marie Holzman, and well-known Taiwanese professors Yeau-Tarn Lee and Chien Yuan Tseng. The European representatives of the well-known Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng are also the initiators and organizers of this symposium. For this reason, Mr. Wei attended last year's symposium and this year's in person. On the afternoon of August 24, this reporter had a special interview of Mr. Wei Jingsheng.

About his trip to Europe this time, Mr. Wei Jingsheng told the reporter: "I am here to attend one of our own meetings of the European branch of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition and this China Road International Symposium. The main scheme of this symposium is to discuss the Taiwan democratization experience, as well as what experience can be absorbed and what lessons could be learned by the people of Mainland China. This symposium had an in-depth discussion of these topics. The other schedule I have for this trip is to travel around Europe and meet with some friends to discuss the situation in Europe and their attention of China, etc. We have some friends in Germany, France, and Italy, etc.

Regarding Taiwan's democratization issue which was discussed during the symposium, Mr. Wei said, "First of all, the democratization of Taiwan debunks a popular lie, that is that the so-called Asian values and traditional Chinese culture are not fit to engage in democracy. Taiwan did a great job, right? Now its democracy is rooted deeper and deeper, and it is moving forward step by step. This progress proves our Chinese culture does not prevent the establishment of democracy. And democracy is clearly better than dictatorship. This experience is the biggest we can accept. It has debunked a popular lie which is going around now in the international community."

To this end, Mr. Wei Jingsheng said that regarding the issue of democracy on Taiwan, the Communist government in Mainland China has claimed on one hand that Taiwan is part of China and Taiwanese are Chinese, while on the other hand claiming that the Chinese people do not fit a democratic system. It is really using its left hand to slap its own right cheek and using its right hand to slap its own left cheek in the international community, while slapping both cheeks of the Western politicians.

At the same time, regarding the inspiration of Taiwan's democratization to the people, Mr. Wei Jingsheng thinks that just like the West, democracy requires everyone to constantly strive to improve. In this regard, he said: "Taiwan's democratization can not suddenly be fully matured. There will be a lot of problems. These problems will arise during the future democratization of Mainland China as well, such as the non-standardized and not so mature struggle between political parties, and the shortage of knowledge of democracy by the masses. These problems are all hindrances to slow the maturity of democracy. Regarding the democratization in Mainland China, many of our friends think that spreading the ideas of democracy and freedom of thought are very important. Especially freedom of thought is particularly important because if there are no important freedoms, such as freedom of expression and the right to personal security, then the opposition party can not be established. When there is no opposition party, democracy is a fake."

到欧洲参加中国之路国际研讨会的魏京生先生，在研讨会闭幕后接受了记者专访。

在丹麦由旅居欧洲的华人、异议人士注册的中国之路研究院，成立后连续三年每年举办了一次国际性的研讨会。参加研讨会的有来自各国的学者、专家。其中包括法国著名汉学家侯芷明教授，台湾著名教授曾建元、李酉潭等。著名中国异议人士魏京生先生的欧洲代表处也是该研讨会的发起者和组织者，为此，魏京生先生也亲自出席了上届和本届研讨会。二十四号下午，记者特别专访了来参加第三届研讨会的魏京生先生。

关于他这次欧洲之行，魏京生先生对记者介绍说：“首先一个是参加我们在这里的一个会议，联席会议的欧洲分部的会议，以及中国之路研讨会，研讨会的主题是讨论台湾民主化的经验对于我们大陆人民来说有什么可以吸收的经验，可以注意的教训。研讨会对此讨论得很深入。我另外一个日程是因为在欧洲一些国家有一些政界的朋友，德国、法国和意大利，我准备走一圈和大家聊一聊欧洲的形势，欧洲对中国的关注等等。”

关于这次会议所讨论的台湾民主化问题，魏京生先生说，“首先来讲，台湾的民主化破除了一个流行的谎言，亚洲的价值观，中国传统文化不适合搞民主。台湾搞得很好，对不对？人家现在民主在一步一步地深入、往前走。这就证明了我们中国人的文化一点都不妨碍建立民主制度，而且民主制度显然比独裁制度要好。这是我们能够接受的最大的经验。这也破除了现在国际社会流行的一个广泛的谎言。”

为此，魏京生先生说，在台湾民主问题上，中共政府一方面说台湾是中国的，是中国人，另一方面又说中国、中国人不适合民主制度，根本就是公开在国际社会用自己的左手打右脸，右手打左脸，左右开弓掌掴西方政客。

与此同时，对于台湾民主化对于民众的启示，魏京生先生认为，如西方一样，民主需要大家一起不断努力改善。对此他说：“台湾的民主化不可能一下子那么成熟，中间会产生很多问题。这些问题将来大陆的民主化也同样会产生，例如有些党派斗争不太规范，不太成熟，人民群众对民主化的认识不够，这都是妨碍民主制度成熟的原因。我们大陆的民主化很多朋友都认为，对人民群众传播民主的思想、自由的思想，特别是自由的思想是非常重要的。因为没有几个重要的自由，如言论自由、人身保障的权利，没有这些也就建立不了反对党；没有反对党民主制度就是假的。”
