A Selected Work of "Wandering and Singing For Freedom - Chinese Literature and Art from Exile and Prisons Series" by the Wei Jingsheng Foundation

Wandering All Over the World

-- A Poem by Dr. Yuejun QIAN, Translated by Ciping HUANG

Editor's note: The following poem set a perfect theme poem for our series "Wandering and Singing For Freedom - Chinese Literature and Art from Exile and Prisons Series."  This poem comes from a large song cycle "Singing for Freedom" that premiered on June 4, 1999 in the Beethoven Concert Hall in Bonn, Germany.

In 1792, Ludwig van Beethoven held his last concert in Germany at a concert hall on this site.  He met the composer Joseph Haydn for the first time there and went to Vienna with him afterwards and never returned to his hometown again.

About the author Dr. Yuejun Qian:

In 1978, Yuejun Qian was admitted to the Tongji University in Shanghai with high score during the national college entrance exam, while working in the countryside as a "sent down youth" at the order of the then Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong.  After his graduation, he was retained by Tongji University as a teacher.  In 1985, he went to Ruhr-Universität Bochum as a research assistant and received his Ph.D. degree in fluid acoustics.  He received several international patents.

In 1986, he founded the Chinese magazine "Rhine Communication" with his colleagues, which is the first Chinese magazine in Europe.  He was serving as editor-in-chief and president of the magazine.  In 1989, he and his colleagues founded the Chinese European Post and has served first as editor-in-chief and then president since then.  He has been the overseas editor-in-chief of the "European City Tours Book Series" for nearly 10 years.  In addition to editing, he also writes for the newspaper and the magazine for Chinese students and scholars in Germany, mainly regarding European politics, economy, and German law, as well appreciations for art and tours of famous European cities.  His hobbies are calligraphy, seal cutting, painting, poetry, prose and music.

He has published many books including: "Collection of Law by Yuejun Qian", "Features of German Law", "Germany: with Legal Spirit and Judicial Reality" and tour books include "Frankfurt", "Malta", and many other kinds of travel books.  He has worked with friends to create and premiere two sets of large song cycles "White Rose" and "Singing For Freedom" which were performed in well-known music halls in Germany.

Wandering All Over the World

Lyrics by Yuejun QIAN, Music by Minxuan ZHANG, Orchestration by Weimao GUO

English translation by Ciping HUANG

1:

I am the wild flower in the rain,

I am the fallen leaf blown by the wind,

Only my music accompanies me

As I wander around day and night

I sing in the street

Pace back and forth on the roadside

I have gone through wind and desert

Wandering to the edge of the world

Wandering to the edge of the world

Where could I found my homeland?

2.

Last night, the stars sank and the moon disappeared

Last night, the storm came with rain and wind

I am an orphan of mankind

Born to wander around the world

I cried in the rain

I screamed in the wind

Where is my country?

Where is my homeland?

The rain and wind in the foreign land

Silver hairs grown in this foreign land

3.

Oh...

Wandering around the world

Wandering street to street

Wandering day and night

The rain and wind in the foreign land

Silver hairs grown in this foreign land

Wandering around the world

For the dream of my life

For the freedom light

I wandered

I wandered

I am wandering around the world
