The
Wei Jingsheng Foundation Announces the Fourteenth Annual "Wei Jingsheng
Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" Award
December

Since
2004, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation has awarded the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese
Democracy Champion Prize" every year on December 5th. In the last thirteen years the awarding
of this prize has had reverberations around the world. Those people persisting in the fight
for freedom and democracy in China, who are at any moment in danger of
persecution of the dictatorial regime, have thus been encouraged and consoled.
As
can be expected, those who nominate a candidate believe the person they have
nominated has made a great contribution to the cause of Chinese democracy and
freedom. Nominating someone in and
of itself is a way to commend all champions of democracy, including those
unknown, untiring democracy heroes who do not concern themselves with fame and
fortune. We have great respect for
their strength of spirit and the sacrifices they have made. As in the past 13 years, we received
many excellent recommendations this year from our friends inside China and
overseas. All the 3 candidates
making it into the final consideration were excellent and it was as ever a
challenge to distinguish and select the best. These final three finalists are: rights defending lawyer
Tang Jingling, human rights activist Zhang Haitao, Tibetan human rights
defender Nyima Lhamo. It was not
easy to select the best from these three finalists. Several judges thus held serious discussions to decide the
awardee.
In
the more than five years since Xi Jinping took over power, political repression
has deepened day by day in China, leading to the deteriorating economic and
social situation in China. After
the 19th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping further
centralized his power and repression has become unprecedented, just like a
second Cultural Revolution in China.
Today, China is under the brutal exploitation and oppression of bureaucratic
capitalism headed by the Communist Party.
Various ethnic conflicts and class contradictions emerge endlessly. While the corrupt officials spend so
much money wining and dining, the majority Chinese are poor and even do not
have enough to eat, nor to keep warm.
What is worse happened just last month as the cold weather arrived; the
new leader in Beijing decided to expel millions of "low-end
population" in a matter of days.
Meanwhile, many Communist leaders in the other cities also copied this
action. All over China, there are
people who lost their homes and are displaced, they could do nothing but crying
on the streets.
This
tragically inhumane act of the Communist regime has been immediately condemned
by the people throughout the country and all over the world, as well as been
exposed by the news media. Many
kind-hearted people, non-governmental organizations and churches also made
their own statements, and tried to help those people in pain to weather the
storm. However, the government
started to warn these groups and individuals not to intervene or to provide
assistance. What kind of
government is this?! What kind of conduct is it doing?! We condemn the atrocities committed by
the Communist regime and pay tribute to these conscientious groups and
individuals.
Today,
the Wei Jingsheng Democracy Champion Prize Judging Committee announces the
recipient of this year's "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion
Prize" to be Mr. Tang Jingling.
Mr. Tang Jingling graduated from the prestigious Shanghai Jiaotong
University and could have walked on the sunshine avenue of "Three
Representatives for Elites" that "keep pace with the times" and
enjoy his own life. However, his
faith and conscience led him to embark on a road of thorns. He gave up the chemical profession that
he originally studied. Instead he
obtained a lawyer's license and defended the common people. As a result, he was repeatedly detained
by the Chinese authorities for some time.
Even when his mother was in critical condition, he was not allowed to
meet with his dying mother for the last time. On May 16, 2014 Tang Jingling was detained. On June 21, 2014, he was officially
arrested on "suspicion of inciting subversion of state power". On January 29, 2016, he was sentenced
to five years in prison by the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court and has
been imprisoned since.
As
a Christian, Lawyer Tang Jingling is one of the main characters in China's
rights-defending movement. In
1971, Tang Jingling was born in Yaojia Village, Mishi Town, Jingzhou City of
Hubei Province (formerly Jiangling County). He entered Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1989, majoring in
polymer materials of Applied Chemistry.
After graduation in 1993, he was assigned to work in chemical
engineering and technology in Guangdong.
In 1997, Tang Jingling attended legal training by the law school in
Shantou University. He passed the
lawyer qualification examination in October of the same year, and obtained his
lawyer qualification certificate in August of the following year. In November 1999, he obtained his
lawyer's license and started to work independently. In March 2000, he was transferred to Guangdong HuaZhiJie Law
Office as a full-time lawyer. In
July 2004, Tang Jingling intervened in Dongguan Xingang labor unrest
cases. Later, he began to
intervene in labor rights and other civil rights cases. In his spare time, Tang Jingling
actively promoted the popularization of legal common sense of migrant
workers. In August 2005, Tang
Jingling was involved in the famous Taishi Village recalls, as the defense
lawyer. Since 2006, he has
launched the "Citizens' Non-Cooperative Movement" and a series of
other right-defending movements.

This
year's award to Mr. Tang Jingling is also an award to all warriors who
willingly sacrifice their well-to-do life because of their beliefs. At the time of the 500th anniversary of
the Protestant Reformation, we saw that the Reformation was not only an
isolated religious reform movement within the Christian Churches, but a social
revolution that swept across Europe.
The political and economic prosperity in the West today are all related
to the breakthroughs and developments in these centuries. However, such a breakthrough and
development cannot be achieved without firm conviction and perseverance, as
well as fearlessness in the face of torture and death.
On
the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution in the Soviet
Union, as all the people in Russia and all over the world are casting away
Communism, the Chinese people under the suppression of the Communist autocracy
also disregard Communism and the one-party dictatorship of the Communist Party
in China. In the past 100 years,
Communism and the Communist Parties have killed hundreds of millions of people,
including the 80 million Chinese by the Chinese Communist regime. If we allow further killing of the
Chinese by the Chinese Communist regime, then it is a shame for the Chinese
people. Mr. Tang Jingling took
actions not only because of his conscience and justice, but also because his
sense of responsibility for the future.
We hope his award now will encourage more people to stand up and fight
the authoritarian regime until the Chinese people get real democracy and
freedom.
The
total prize pooled together this year is US$ 4,000. Those who donated money are donating their passion and
belief in Chinese democracy. For
this passion we want to express our deepest gratitude. In addition we also want to express our
appreciation to all those people who recommended nominees for our fourteenth
annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize". We thank all of you for your support

魏京生基金会第十四届“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”颁发公告
自2004年以来，每年12月5日魏京生基金会都会颁发“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”。过去十三次的颁奖在世界范围引起了很大的反响。对于正在中国坚持奋斗、随时都有危险的人们，是很大的鼓励与支持。
毫无疑义，被提名人为中国的民主和自由做出了卓越的贡献。提名本身是对所有民主斗士，包括那些默默无闻、坚持不懈、不计名利的勇士们的牺牲精神的赞扬。和往年一样，今年我们也收到十多个来自国内外朋友们的优秀推荐。最终的三位入围者是：维权律师唐荆陵，维权人士张海涛，维权藏人尼玛拉姆。从三个最终入选名单中选择出最优秀的获奖人并非易事，几位评委为此进行了认真严肃的讨论并决定了获奖人。
习近平上位的五年多来，政治上的压制日益加深，导致中国的经济及社会局势都每况愈下。中共19大之后，习近平得以进一步的集权，打压也变得前所未有，俨如第二个文革。如今的中国，在以中共为首的官僚资本主义的残酷剥削和压迫下，各种民族矛盾，阶级矛盾层出不穷。当贪官污吏花天酒地，“朱门酒肉臭”之时，底层大多数的贫穷老百姓却日日吃不饱，穿不暖。更有甚者，就在寒冬已经抵达的上个月，北京市的新领导决定在几天之内驱逐数百万的“低端人口”。与此同时，中国许多城市也竞相效仿。全国各地，无家可归的人们流离失所，痛哭街头。
中共的这一惨无人道的行为，立即受到全国各地人民与全世界各国人民与媒体的谴责。许多善良的人们与非政府组织和教会也纷纷表态，力图帮助这些苦难的人们度过难关。然而，政府却开始警告这些团体与个人，不得介入和提供帮助。这是什么样的政府！这是什么样的世道！我们谴责中共的暴行，也向这些有良知的团体和个人表示敬意。
今天，“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”评委会宣布今年“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”的获得者为唐荆陵先生。唐荆陵先生毕业于著名的上海交通大学，本来可以走“与时俱进”的“三个代表”的阳光大道。然而，他的信仰和良心使得他走上了一条遍布荆棘之路。他放弃了他原来学的化工行业，考取律师执照，为老百姓维权。因此，他被中共当局多次刁难扣押，甚至在他母亲病危之时，都不容许他最后一次与母亲见面。2014年5月16日唐荆陵以涉嫌寻衅滋事被刑事拘留。2014年6月21日，他被以涉嫌煽动颠覆国家政权罪正式拘捕，2016年1月29日，他被广州中院判处五年有期徒刑，关押至今。
身为基督徒的唐荆陵律师，是中国维权运动的主要人物之一。1971年，唐荆陵出生于湖北省荆州市弥市镇姚家村（原江陵县）。1989年入读上海交通大学应用化学系高分子材料专业，1993年毕业后分配至广东从事化学工程技术工作。1997年，唐荆陵参加汕头大学法学院法律培训，同年10月通过律师资格考试，次年8月获律师资格证书。1999年11月取得律师执照后开始独立执业，2000年3月转入广东华之杰律师事务所担任专职律师。2004年7月，唐荆陵介入东莞兴昂劳工骚乱案件。之后，他开始介入劳工权益等公民权利案件。工作之余，唐荆陵积极推动流动劳工的法律常识普及工作。2005年8月，唐荆陵介入著名的太石村罢免事件。担任因参与罢免被迫害村民的行政诉讼代理律师和辩护律师。2006年起，他发动了"公民不合作运动"及一系列其它维权运动。

今年对唐荆陵先生的颁奖，也是对所有因为理念，因为信仰，而情愿放弃优裕无虑的生活，甘愿为大众的福祉承受磨难的勇士。在基督新教500周年的此时，我们看到新教运动不仅是一场孤立的基督教会内部的宗教改革运动，而是席卷整个欧洲的一场社会革命。今日西方政治和经济的繁荣，无不与这几百年的突破和发展有关。然而，没有坚定的信念，没有坚持的作为，乃至面对酷刑与死亡的大无畏精神，这种突破和发展是不可能的。
在也是苏联十月革命100周年之际，在俄国人民乃至全世界人民都唾弃共产主义的今天，在中共专制压制下的中国人民也一样地唾弃共产主义以及中共的一党专政。100年来，共产主义及共产党杀害了上亿民众，包括中共政权害死了约八千万的中国人民。如果我们再任其胡作非为下去，那就是中国人民的耻辱了。唐荆陵先生的所作所为，不仅仅是出于他的良心和正义，也是对未来的责任感。我们希望他的获奖，将鼓励更多的人们站起来，与专制政权斗争，直到中国人民得到真正的民主与自由。
这次汇集的奖金总额为四千美元（US $4,000.00）。捐款的人们捐出的是他们对中国民主的热情和信念，在此我们表示衷心感谢。此外，我们也向第十四届“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”参与提名的所有朋友表示谢意。感谢您们的支持和鼓励。
