Strange
Tales in the New Year (part 4)
--
Wei Jingsheng
This
year's New Year period is particularly long; from New Year's Day of the Western
Calendar to the Chinese New Year of Spring Festival, there is a total of one
and a half months. So we could
fully discuss our topics during this period. The common people are most concerned about is the size of
their moneybags. As the saying
goes: If the moneybags do not look like drums, our hearts will beat like drums
(with worries). As the Spring
Festival approaches, most people are worried if there is enough money in their
bags for all the expenses.
All
the media are saying how well China has developed, with an average income per
person of a few thousand U.S. dollars per year - which should be counted as
moderately developed or well to do in the society. So why are there worries? Indeed, there are many people who have entered a well-to-do
status, that is, the so-called middle class, such as small business owners and
white-collar workers. Don't you
see them in the movies and television programs? And their numbers are quite large, to surpass the population
of an average big country.
But
China has a population of billions of people. Although the tens of millions of middle-class people are
more than the combined population of Britain and France, in China that is only
about 5% of the population, with the vast majority of people are still trapped
in poverty. What I am saying is
not the number of poor people openly admitted to by the Chinese
government. The poverty standard
itself is unusually low as defined by the Chinese government, yet the figures
are still fraudulent. Everybody
knows that number is not reliable except for the people with ulterior motives.
We
can look around to find out how many elderly Chinese are not worried about
their medical costs; how many parents are not worried about their children's
college expense; how many young people are not worried about buying a house to
get married; how many families are not worried about food and needed nutrition;
and so on and so on. The families
that are not worried about these issues are about less than 5%. That is to say, the other 95% of the
general public belongs to the poor people at different levels.
Every
day, the People's Daily argues that there are also poor Americans in the United
States. If the U.S. newspapers
talk about it themselves, then it must be true! A group of government agents and the so-called angry youths
also follow this rhetoric of so and so: that is, "I heard that buying a
house in the USA is not easy"; "they have to pay college loans";
"there are homeless on the streets", and so on.
However,
the People's Daily does not add: the homeless in the United States are sent to
shelters by the government personnel where they could eat and drink. Usually, there are various charities
that distribute bread, butter and milk free of charge so that these not-rich
poor who still have their houses to live in have their nutrition guaranteed.
Children
can go to high school without paying tuition. There is free lunch and free school bus service. Even more noteworthy is that in some
states children enjoy the same treatment of schooling even if they are not
legal American citizens. This is
in stark contrast to the so-called low-end population that was recently driven
away by Xi Jinping.
It
is claimed that China is already developed, and even will catch up with the
United States to become the first economic power in a few years. But why can't it even provide these
minimum-security measures? Why as
the number of Chinese billionaires will soon surpasses those in the United
States, so many poor Chinese do not even have the minimum protections? This difference is associated with the
different social and economic structures of the two countries.
The
United States is a democratic society, that is to say, the electorate of the
common people are the masters. As
the owner is reflected in all social and economic measures, it must ensure that
the owner is well looked after.
From salaries and benefits to all kinds of safeguards, the poor
Americans must be taken care of.
Otherwise, if the masters are unhappy, then you will be voted out and
have to step down. Therefore, in
the USA, most of the national income is consumed by ordinary people, and this
consumption in turn guarantees the development of production. Both economy and development revolve
around serving the people.
China
is a dictatorship and its power is monopolized by a handful of people. Of course, money is also monopolized by
a handful of people. The people
are treated as slaves or livestock.
According to the principle of Marxism, they only need to be provided
with the minimum wage that can guarantee reproduction. Why should the rich share the benefits
brought by social and economic development, with animal husbandry? Of course, the high-level animals, such
as their mounts and pets will have a better treatment. For example, the treatment of
academicians and commissioners has long been a combination of three elites with
the Communist regime.
Over
all, some statements of Marxism are still correct, such as that the economic
base and the superstructure should be adapted to each other.. The difference in political
superstructure between China and the United States results in the subsistence
levels of Chinese people being fundamentally different from American people.
