Mercedes-Benz Apology and the Arrest of Duan WeiHong
On
February 9, 2018, Wei Jingsheng was invited to participate in a discussion in
the China Live program hosted by Radio Free Asia's He Ping. The main subject of the program was:
"The Mercedes-Benz Apology and the Arrest of Duan WeiHong". The other guests who also joined the
discussion were: Mr. XIA Yeliang, a Libertarian scholar and former professor of
Peking University, and Mr. ZHU Xinxin, an independent commentator in Hebei,
China.
This
week, Mercedes-Benz, the luxury car manufacturer owned by the German automaker
Daimler, apologized twice in public and also in a letter to the Chinese
ambassador to Germany, to deeply express its regret for hurting the feelings of
the "Chinese people".
Mercedes-Benz has always aimed at the rich and powerful as its market
goal. So what had it done? In a recent advertisement by this
company through social media, it quoted a famous line from the Dalai Lama:
"Look at the situation from all angles, and you will become more
open." Is this sentence
wrong? The Daimler Company did not
explain. However, the company
emphasized in its apology statement that it has "no intention of
questioning or challenging in any manner China's sovereignty or territorial
integrity." This apology is
another example of "self-censorship" after the Chinese government
accused international businesses including Marriott, Delta Air Lines and Qantas
Airlines of being involved in "separatism" regarding their division
of business related to Hong Kong and Taiwan.
On
February 7, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that Gui Minhai, a Swedish
bookseller who was abducted, has been "compulsorily indicted"
according to law for violating Chinese law. As the Chinese government violated the international
consular convention on the principle of arbitrarily arresting foreign citizens
without specifying the charge of accusation, it has led to strong condemnation
by the European Union and international human rights organizations.
Also,
according to the "New York Times" in the USA, a family business
partner of former Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, Duan Weihong, who was from a
state-owned real estate company in Tianjin, has been secretly detained by the
Chinese authorities since last year.
Together with the mother, the younger brother, the daughter, and the son
of Wen Jiabao, Duan set up or invested in many companies and enterprises. Only counting the value of the earlier
shares of China Ping An Insurance held by Wen's mother, the current value is as
high as nearly 6 billion US dollars.
The "anti-corruption" campaign of Xi Jinping usually starts
from the investigation of the family members or subordinates, then shifts to seize

2018年2月9日，魏京生先生参加自由亚洲电台何平主持的中国热评节目："奔驰道歉，“中国人民”躺枪？段伟红被抓，下一只“大老虎”是谁？"同时参加评论的嘉宾还有自由至上主义学者、原北京大学教授夏业良先生，及河北的独立评论人士朱欣欣先生。
德国汽车制造商戴姆勒旗下豪华品牌车“梅赛德斯-奔驰”本周，相继两次以公开声明和致信中国驻德大使等方式，对给“中国人民”造成的感情伤害深感痛心并且致歉。一向以瞄准权贵、富豪为市场目标的奔驰车，究竟做了什么？原来该公司近日通过海外社交媒体打广告时，引用了一句出自达赖喇嘛的名言：从多个视角审视事务，能令你视野更为开阔。这句话有错吗？奔驰公司没有解释。但该公司在道歉声明中强调，“戴姆勒集团绝无意以任何形式，质疑或挑战中国的主权和领土完整”。这也是继万豪集团、达美航空、澳洲航空等国际企业因涉及香港、台湾区域经营划分，而遭中国政府指责涉嫌“分裂”后，奔驰公司道歉所引发的另一起“自我审查”事件。
而中国外交部2月7日证实，遭劫持"失踪"的瑞典籍书商桂民海因违反中国法律，目前已被依法实施“强制措施”。中方“粗暴”违反国际领事公约、不说明指控罪名而任意拘捕外国公民的举动，目前引发欧盟和国际人权组织的强烈谴责。
另据美国《纽约时报》披露，中国前总理温家宝的家族商业合伙人、出身天津国企房地产公司的段伟红自去年已被当局秘密拘押。段伟红与温家宝的母亲、弟弟、女儿、儿子一起成立或投资众多公司、企业。仅段伟红帮助温家宝母亲获得的“平安保险”早期股份，目前价值就高达近60亿美元。习式“反腐”，虽通常先以调查家人或下属开始，再对目标进行围攻。但温家宝是否会成为下一只“大老虎”，格外引人关注。
