HUANG Ciping Talks About Mrs. Lois Wheeler Snow in the Live Show of Mingjing TV:

A Disaster in China from "Red Star Over China" and Mrs. Snow Sought Understanding From the Chinese

On Monday, April 16, at 11am in the USA (Beijing time 11pm on April 16), HUANG Ciping (@huang_ciping) was invited as the honored guest to appear in the one-hour program hosted by Dr. CHEN Xiaoping (@xchen15) of Mingjing TV to talk about Mrs. Lois Wheeler Snow, who passed away on April 3, 2018 in Switzerland at the age of 97.

Mrs. Snow was the widow of Mr. Edgar Snow, an American journalist and author of "Red Star Over China."  The book, published in 1937, was the most influential book on the Western understanding of China at the time as well as being influential on Western sympathy for the Red Chinese guerrilla movement in the 1930s. The book profoundly influenced and impacted modern Chinese history.  Although she was invited to China many times as a national guest by the Communist regime, Mrs. Snow was shocked and awakened by the June 4 Massacre in Beijing in 1989 and only returned to China once since then, in her effort to help and support the victims and families of the 1989 Massacre.  Since then, she has also clearly expressed her support for human rights and democracy in China, including the flagship Chinese figures such as Wei Jingsheng.

Both Wei Jingsheng and Huang Ciping, the executive director of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, had profound friendships with Mrs. Snow and her family for years.  During the TV program, as a memorial to Mrs. Snow, Huang Ciping wore a beautiful sweater that was hand knitted for her by Mrs. Snow when she was already 84 years old.  Huang recalled the details of how Mrs. Snow and her children attended Wei Jingsheng's speech at the University of Geneva in the spring of 1999, and invited him to their home to make him as a friend, and express and explain their stand for Chinese democracy and human rights.

During the live TV broadcasting, Huang Ciping recalled how nice yet principled Mrs. Snow was, especially in her support for the Chinese people which she recognized later in her life as different from the Chinese Communist regime.  In particular, Huang Ciping recalled the press conference in early April 2000 that Mrs. Snow attended in the United Nations' building in Geneva just after she, accompanied by her son Christopher Snow, returned from their last trip to China.  There, Mrs. Snow condemned the suppression and abuse of power by the Chinese Communist regime and showed her firm support to the Chinese people just as she thought her husband Mr. Edgar Snow would have if he was alive.  Later on, she consulted with us several times as if she should bring Mr. Edgar Snow's ashes back from Beijing University as a gesture.

During the TV show, Huang Ciping also recalled that years after, every spring they would be in Geneva to attend the United Nations' Commission for Human Rights sessions and would visit Mrs. Snow in her home.  Mrs. Snow always offered tasty meals to the guests, sometime receiving almost a dozen representatives of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition from all over the world.  Huang Ciping recalled the heart-warming times when she stayed overnight with Mrs. Snow at her invitation, even though arriving very late in the night.  A lover of nature and beauty, Mrs. Snow would decorate Huang's bedroom with fresh spring flowers from her garden.  A lover of peace, Mrs. Snow showed her desire to stop war as well as her sympathy for people in suffering.

Mrs. Snow also lent her support to the China briefings Wei Jingsheng and Chinese activists organized in the United Nations building during the Human Rights Commission sessions every year following.  This support included giving written statements and even trying to make the almost one-hour trip to show her support personally despite being already in her 80's.

During the one hour long TV interview, Huang Ciping also talked about how Mrs. Snow not only had the determined words for justice, but also action.  In June 2000, Mrs. Snow accepted Huang's invitation and flew all way from Europe to Washington DC to join the 11th annual commemoration of the June 4 Massacre hosted by the IFCSS as the primary speaker in front of the Chinese embassy in the USA.  When Huang Ciping visited her home, Mrs. Snow also tried to get her help and translation to get connected to the victims and families of the June 4 Massacre, including Ms. Ding Zilin.

Regarding many Chinese thoughts of the misconception of Mr. Edgar Snow's book, Huang Ciping commented that even the Chinese people were deceived by the Communist concealment and lies, including people who became high ranking officials within the Communist system such as Wei Jingsheng's father.  It took them years to see the truth and to realize their earlier ideals were not realized in the reality.  Indeed, as many people have said, the most successful weapon of the Chinese Communist Party is propaganda, especially so when it was in contrast to the corruptive Kuomintang regime during the 1930's.

Huang Ciping pointed out that even now, the lies of the Communist regime still deceive many people, yet Mrs. Snow clear minded of this, and thus she started to seek the truth.  It is even more admirable and brave for Mrs. Snow to take the initiative in seeking understanding and to choose to stand on the side of the Chinese people, instead of the suppressive regime.  Regarding host Chen Xiaoping's question (that is also many Chinese peoples' question) of what would Mr. Edgar Snow be thinking now if he was still alive, Huang Ciping expressed her understanding of Mrs. Snow's comment that her husband was trying to defy the censorship to write his books, while he believed Mao Zedong's revolutionary forces were struggling against suppression and abuse of power by the Kuomintang as many Chinese also believed.  As the Chinese Communist regime has even more suppression and abuse of power, of course it should be condemned as well.  Through her friendship and understanding of the whole Snow family, Huang Ciping felt that if Mr. Snow was alive and knowing the truth, he would take the same stand as his wife did.

During the interview, Huang Ciping also talked about other details she knew about the Snow family, and over the years how much she enjoyed receiving letters from Mrs. Snow, all with beautiful calligraphy-like handwriting of intelligence and emotion - her joy to be a grandma to two beautiful grandchildren and her great sorrow of the death of her son, Christopher.  Huang talked about how heartbroken she was at the death of Christopher Snow in the same farmhouse where they met several times and was also where Mr. Edgar Snow died.  She also pointed out that the Chinese name for Sian, the daughter of Mrs. Snow, was wrong; she was named after the "West Capital" of Xi'An, another indicator of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Snow's sentimental love of China and the Chinese people.
