Letter to the European Parliament

Dear
President Antonio Tajani and Members of the European Parliament,
Thank
you, President Tajani, for inviting me as a laureate of the Sakharov Freedom of
Thought Prize to participate in the 30-year anniversary of the Sakharov Prize
held in the European Parliament. I
am sorry, after a lot of troubles and waiting, and because the Belgian
government resisted giving me the travel documents that I need to come to your
parliament located in Belgium, I cannot attend this great event. Here I would like also to apologize to
all my friends who care about human rights, democracy and freedom in China.
The
Belgian government used to give travel documents needed for guests invited by
the European Parliament. Although
we are Chinese citizens, we cannot get Chinese passports from the Communist
regime because of our human rights and democracy activities. Both my assistant and I have obtained
Belgian travel documents to come to the events in Belgium held by the European
Parliament in the past, just as we have received various travel documents from
a number of Western governments in the past 20 years. However, today my travel and the required documents were
just as difficult and troublesome to get as I have encountered by the customs
in various other countries. Many
of these difficulties are inextricably linked to the Communist regime in China,
including through the Interpol that is now controlled by the Chinese government.
It
is a pity that I cannot meet many old friends and exchange ideas. However, I still want to congratulate
you for a successful conference to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the
Sakharov Prize. I always
appreciate the strong support from the European Parliament and the European
people to the freedom of thought, human rights and democracy throughout the
world. However, I look more to a
future when we will not just get the honor to be present, but also have solid
actions of support.

给欧洲议会的道歉信

尊敬的欧洲议会的议长和议员们：
谢谢议长先生本人邀请我作为萨哈洛夫自由思想奖的得奖人参加在欧洲议会举办的萨哈洛夫奖30年大庆活动。很抱歉，由于比利时政府坚持拒绝发给我旅行所需的证件，屡经挫折与等待，我不能参加这次盛会。在此，我也向所有关心中国人权和民主自由的朋友们致以歉意。
比利时政府过去曾经很配合地发给欧洲议会所邀请的客人所需的旅行证件。尽管作为中国公民，我们却因为民主与人权的主张和行为而拿不到中国护照，我和我的助手都曾经拿到过比利时的旅行证件，就像我在二十年来拿到过西方政府的各种旅行证件一样。但我的旅行及所需的证件也像我在各国海关曾经遇到过的各种麻烦一样，来之不易，麻烦多多。这些多与中共的政府有脱不了的关系，其中已经被中国政府控制的国际刑警组织。
很遗憾不能和许多老朋友见面交流思想。但仍然祝贺大会圆满成功。我感谢欧洲议会与欧洲人民对全世界的思想自由和人权民主事业所给予的支持。但我希望今后这种支持将不仅仅局限于荣誉，也将是行之有效的行动。
