On
August 3, 2018, Wei Jingsheng, Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy
Coalition, was invited to participate in a discussion on the China Live program
hosted by Radio Free Asia's He Ping.
The main subjects of the program were: Another strike on the China-US
trade wars? Is Xi Jinping's
"Six Stabilities" call just daydreaming? Other guests participating in the program included: Zhang
Qi, an independent scholar from Chongqing, Sichuan, China, and Professor Xia
Ming, Graduate Center of CUNY. The
following is a brief introduction by Radio Free Asia at the beginning of the
program.
This
week, the US-China trade war has once again escalated. The United States announced plans to
impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods worth 200 billion U.S. dollars; from
the previous 10% to 25%. The
Chinese officials also offered a $60 billion tariff retaliation against the US
after additional wordings of blackmail and arrogance. At the same time, facing the man-made disasters of faulty
vaccines, the workers movement in Shenzhen Jasic Technology, robbing of coffins
and burning the deceased bodies in Jiangxi Province, and other social hotspots,
Xi Jinping's Politburo once again issued early warnings of maintaining "stable
employment, stable finance, stable foreign trade, stable foreign investment,
stable investment, stable future" and so on. Will the so-called "Six Stabilities" be able to
avoid the social unrest in China with concerns both inside China and
internationally? How could these
disasters be tied to the future destiny of China and the Communist Party which
claims "one authority determines all"? This program is to explore these topics.
