HUANG Ciping's
Responses at the 63rd Symposium of China Research Institute by Mingjing Live
about the Sexual Assault Hearing in the US Congress
On Friday,
October 5, 2018, at 10am Eastern USA time, Huang Ciping, the executive director
of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, appeared at the 63rd Symposium of China
Research Institute, in a discussion of
"The Sexual Assault Hearing: A Milestone for the MeToo Movement or
the Public Opinion Assassination of Brett Kavanaugh” on
Mingjing Live.
The invited
guests participating in the discussion also included Vicky FENG, CEO and
President of LifeScience Plus; Shan Lin, Chairman of the Asian American
Democratic Club; and ZHU Leping, a lawyer and a publisher. The symposium was hosted by Chen
Xiaoping, host of Mingjing Live.
It is now
available on the Internet at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5BXhnKf9as&feature=youtu.be
The following
are the main points Huang Ciping made during her appearance and debate about
the MeToo campaign and the confirmation process related to Judge Kavanaugh.
1. How do you
evaluate the performance of the two protagonists at the hearing - Brett
Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford?
Huang's
answer: I have been very busy recently.
I only heard a total of little more than twenty minutes of these two
while I was driving and waiting at airport terminals. I feel that professor Ford was calmer,
and Judge Kavanaugh was more intense.
2. The topic
of MeToo has seized the opportunity to become a national topic. Is it beneficial to the protection of
women or not? Will this hearing
allow women's rights topics to be used by party politics?
Huang's
answer: The original intention of the MeToo movement was for the purpose to
protect women. Thus it is good to
get people's attention. However,
this hearing indeed has become the focus and tool of party politics, and
people's votes are along party lines, which is a pity.
3. If
Kavanaugh gets confirmed, is this going to be a major setback for the MeToo
movement?
Huang's
answer: That is not necessarily the case.
The MeToo movement is a necessary step in the development of civil
society. Even if there are twists
and turns, it will continue to move forward until people can treat the opposite
sex truly and equally; and the victims dare to speak and act, thus to promote
the further realization of social equity.
4. Kavanaugh
said that the allegations have become a national shame. Some people criticize this as a juggling
and media assassination by presumption of guilt. What do you think?
Huang's
answer: I feel that Kavanaugh has raised this issue way too high. This type of experience can make people
emotional. But when one is getting
too excited by one's own emotions, it will affect a judge's ability to reach a
fair and just judgment.
5. Will this
incident exacerbate the splitting of American society?
Huang's
answer: Discussing these incidents is the beginning of solving the
problem. This will further promote
the understanding and discussion of the relevant affairs of the society, so as
to achieve the final understanding, reconciliation and resolution.
During the TV
debate, Huang Ciping also recounted the sexual harassment she and others
experienced, as well as her decades long effort and work for women's rights, as
she believe women's rights are human rights. She expressed her disappointment of the
party politics override on the fundamental issues, include women's rights. She also described the negative
responses from mostly men she received when she wrote articles calling for
women's rights and equality to men in the 1990's. In particular, she expressed her outrage
of the victims being ridiculed and doubly jeopardized when the sexual
harassment was refused or reported.
She called on all women to stand up, speak up and take action against
sexual harassment.

Vicky
