Ms. Marie Holzman's Speech at the Memorial Service of Mr. WEI Xiaotao

What WEI Shanshan (Wei Jingsheng's youngest sister) just said let me think about some things in the past. When we went to Beijing together in 1995, we did not know where Wei Jingsheng was at that time. Wei Shanshan told me to find the National Security Department and so on. They all said that her brother was still alive, but would not say anything else, nor did they say what would happen in the future.

Then we left China. I went to Hong Kong and told people that our main problem was that we did not know where Wei Jingsheng was. The Hong Kong newspapers reported the news. That resulted in a huge impact on my life -- from that time on, I could no longer go to China. That is because the Chinese government discovered my reporting and it was particularly angry with me. You may ask these kinds of questions, but not to be publicized. After that, I can only do things and live in France, not in China.

My relationship with Wei Xiaotao was also very special, because I did not see him in China. After he arrived in France, I learned who he was. Initially, he said that he would go to the United States and would not stay in France. But a year later, he still did not get approval from the USA and had to stay in France. I started to help him from that time. He quickly got his political asylum, because his kind of situation had never happened before -- how can a Chinese citizen be "repatriated" back to France? Generally, only the French people could be repatriated back to France. It is impossible for a Chinese citizen to be repatriated back to France.

So he could only live in France. I had the opportunity to chat with him often. There was only one content for chatting, and that was politics. He was particularly concerned about Chinese politics. I think that he read the Internet and listened to news everyday. He was particularly concerned about the Chinese politics.

I do not know where he got so much information. I could ask him to help me to analyze what happened to China. I found him to be very smart, but the most impressive thing was his memory. All the Chinese leaders, his comrades in the army, and any colleagues where he worked, he remembered very clearly. He remembered what had happened, even very clearly all the times and places.

But his only hope was to return to Beijing someday. I guess that for this reason, there was not enough space in his brain to adapt to French life, learn the French language and so on.

However today I remember some of Liu Xiaobo's situation. The situation between Liu Xiaobo's brother and Liu Xiaobo was very bad. Liu Xiaobo's brother said incredibly bad words to Liu Xiaobo and even thanked the Communist regime for providing such good conditions to his brother. In fact, we all know that the Communist regime killed Liu Xiaobo. He even said that it saved money for their family by sprinkling the ashes of Liu Xiaobo into the sea, so they do not have to build a grave for Liu Xiaobo. How insulting and despicable these words are. None of them in his family helped Liu Xiaobo.

Today, this family is completely opposite, with mutual help, mutual support, and mutual love. This lets us feel more comfortable in this regard. One of the questions that Wei Xiaotao and I often talked about was his relationship with his elder brother. Because he cared about politics so much, why did not he write articles and participate in activities? He said: my elder brother is doing it, so let him do it. "I do not want to say something different than him, causing trouble for him."

I asked him if his situation was due to the influence of his elder brother. He said that he never complained about Wei Jingsheng, never scolded his brother, only scolded the Communist regime. He said that this is not the problem of Wei Jingsheng, but a problem of the Communist regime. For this, I admire him very much because this is the truth. I have the same opinion with both of the brothers.

玛丽·侯芷明女士在魏晓涛先生追思会上的讲话

刚刚珊珊说的一些事情，让我思考过去的一些事情。我们九五年一起去北京的时候，不知道魏京生那个时候在哪儿。魏珊珊告诉我找了国安部等等，他们都说你的哥哥还活着，但是也没说什么别的情况，也没有说将来会怎么样。

然后我们就离开了中国，我到了香港，我告诉人家我们现在的主要问题，就是不知道魏京生现在在哪儿。香港的报纸报道了这个消息。这对我的生活造成了巨大的影响，从那个时候起，我就不能再去中国。因为中国政府发现了这件事，对我特别的生气。因为这样的事情你可以问，但是不能发表。这之后我做事情和生活只能在法国，不能去中国了。

我和魏晓涛的关系也很特别，因为我原来在中国没有见过他。他到了法国之后我才知道他是谁。他刚开始说，我会到美国去，不会留在法国。但是一年之后，他还是没有得到美国的批准，只好留在了法国。我是从那个时候开始帮助他的。他很快就拿到了政治避难。因为他这种情况从来没有出现过，一个中国人怎么会被遣送回法国？一般只能是法国人被遣送回法国，不可能一个中国人被遣送回法国。

所以他只能在法国生活，我有机会经常和他在一起聊天。聊天的内容基本只有一个，那就是政治。他特别关心中国的政治。我估计他每天看网络，听新闻什么的，他就是特别关心中国的政治。

不知道他从哪儿得来的那么多消息，他就是特别关心中国的政治。中国发生了什么问题，我都可以请他帮我分析。我发现他就是非常聪明，但是最不得了的是他的记忆力。所有中国的领导人，他当兵时候的战友，任何工作以后的同事，他都记得很清楚。发生了什么事，连时间地点都记得很清楚。

但是他唯一的希望，就是什么时候能回到北京去。我估计因为这个原因，他脑子里没有足够的空间，去适应法国的生活，学法国的语言等等。

但我今天记得刘晓波的一些情况，刘晓波的兄弟跟刘晓波的情况非常不好。刘晓波的兄弟对刘晓波说的话是不可思议的糟糕，还感谢共产党给他的兄弟提供了这么好的条件，其实我们都知道中共杀死了刘晓波。还说把骨灰洒在大海里，给我们的家庭节约了钱，不用去建立坟墓。这些话多么的侮辱，多么的卑鄙。他们没有人帮助刘晓波。

今天这个家庭是完全相反的，有互相的帮助，互相的支持，互相的热爱。让我们在这方面有比较舒服的感觉。我和魏晓涛经常谈的一个问题，就是他和他哥哥的关系。因为他那么关心政治，你为什么不写文章，不参加活动。他说我哥哥在做，就让他做，我不要说和他不一样的话，给他造成麻烦。

我就问他你现在这个处境，是因为你哥哥的影响吧。他说他从来没有埋怨过魏京生，从来没骂过他哥哥，只骂共产党。只说这不是魏京生的问题，这是共产党的问题。为了这个，我非常佩服他，因为这是事实。我跟他们两个人的观点是一样的。
