Wei Jingsheng's Condolence Letter to Mrs. Helen Bernstein & the Family of Mr. Robert Bernstein

Dear Helen and family members of Mr. Robert Bernstein,

I am very sorry to learn of the passing of Mr. Bernstein recently. Sorry for this late letter, as I was occupied by the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the June 4 Massacre in Beijing, as well as other death and illness of my friends.

I vividly remember the last time I met with Bob just a half year ago on November 17, 2018 at his home. At that time, he was ready to go out and join the Thanksgiving gathering of the family, and told us his latest include this arrangement in excitement. As we were departing, he found a good spot in front of the bookshelves and we took a photo together.

I have a lot to remember and to say about Bob. I truly admire what he did in publishing and especially what he did for us the dissidents of different countries. Over the past two and half decades, I am very thankful and often moved by Bob's fatherly love. The help and care he often gave to me and my family, cannot be compared with anyone else. In particular, when I was seriously ill 5 years ago, it was his urging and timely help that allowed me to enter the Johns Hopkins Hospital in time, where I stayed for 28 days until I was fully recovered from a deadly illness of liver abscess. Recently, one of my fellow Chinese friends has just died of this same rare disease in Germany, which took away my time and attention as well.

So to me, Bob is not just a fatherly figure, but a man who gave me life again. Just for this I will remember him forever. In 1997, he published my "Courage to Stand Alone - Letters from Prisons" which won international attention and was followed by my release. Over the years, he has always been there when I needed. I enjoyed meeting and conversation with him, regarding China as well as other events and issues internationally.

Over the important issues about China, Bob always stood with us, in courage and confidence. He has done so much for the Chinese people and myself that we will always remember. I am still very grateful for him accepting the "Human Rights and Freedom Defender" award by the Wei Jingsheng Foundation in 2016, along with US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Later, when we went New York City to hand him the award statue, we received a wonderful treat including a delicious lunch with him and Helen. That was a very heartwarming moment for me.

Yes, indeed, China has come to this turning point of change, after a decades long love and devotion from Bob. Thus my sorrow goes even deeper to have lost him at this critical time. I feel the loss of your loss. I share the sorrow with you. Please accept my condolence. We shall always remember him.

亲爱的海伦及罗伯特伯恩斯坦先生的家人，

我很遗憾得知伯恩斯坦先生最近去世了。这封迟到的信首先是向你们致歉，因为我近期太忙了-忙于纪念北京六四大屠杀30周年的活动，及我其他朋友的死亡和疾病等。

我清楚地记得半年前在2018年11月17日最后一次在他家中与鲍勃见面的情景。那时，他正准备外出参加全家的感恩节聚会。他兴奋地告诉我们他的情况包括这个安排。当我们即将分别时，他在书架前找好位置，我们一起合影。

我有许多有关鲍勃的记忆。我真的很佩服他在出版界的成就，尤其是他为不同国家的持不同政见者所做的一切。在过去的二十五年里，我非常感激并经常被鲍勃的父爱所感动。他经常为我及家人提供帮助和照顾，他所作的一切其他人无法相提并论。特别是5年前当我病重时，正是他的催促和及时的帮助使我能够及时进入约翰霍普金斯医院，在那里待了28天，直到我战胜肝脓肿这个可以致命的疾病，完全康复。（最近，我的一位中国朋友刚刚在德国死于这个同样罕见的疾病，这也消耗了我近来的时间和精力。）

所以对我而言，鲍勃不仅仅提供了慈父样的关怀，而是个再次给我生命的恩人。为此我会永远记住他。1997年，他出版发表了我的“孤独的勇气 -- 监中书信”，引起了国际关注，以及随后我被释放。多年来，他在我需要的时候一直在那里。我喜欢与他会面和谈话，尤其是有关中国及其它国际性的事件和问题。

关于中国的重要问题，鲍勃总是勇敢和自信地站在我们这边。他为中国人民和我本人都做了很多。我们将永远记住他。至今，我仍然非常感谢他与美国众议院议长南希·佩洛西一起接受2016年魏京生基金会颁发的“人权自由卫士奖”。后来，当我们去纽约市为他送递那奖的雕像时，我们与他和海伦共进美味的午餐，至今回味无穷。对我而言，那是个非常温馨的时刻。

事实上，经过鲍勃长达数十年的热爱和奉献，中国已经走到了一个重要转折点。因此，在这个关键时刻失去他，更加深了我的悲伤。我能感到你们的悲哀，我和你一样伤心。请接受我的哀悼。我们将永远记住他。
