Hong
Kong's New Model of Resistance
--
reported by Shi Shan, Radio Free Asia
August
14, 2019
The
large-scale protest movement in Hong Kong in the past two months has
intensified in the absence of a unified coordination organization. Some analysts say that a large
coordination platform is currently being formed.
The
recent protest movement in Hong Kong has been called "a new model of the
information age" by some foreign media. The protesters communicated on some social media platforms
and coordinated themselves to protest.
Protests from the initial demonstrations of one million people and two
million people gradually evolved into so-called "flowering
everywhere", which broke out in all parts of the Hong Kong including
Kowloon and the New Territories, as well as developing new models such as flash
protests, etc.
Leung
Kwok-hung, the former Hong Kong Legislative Council member who was deprived of
his qualifications, was one of the earliest people in Hong Kong to launch
street protests. He told Radio
Free Asia that the coordination mechanism for large-scale movement can only be
gradually formed during the movement.
"Different
platforms have finally developed into a large platform. Only in the actual operation of
individual platforms, will it finally develop a mechanism of
coordination."
He
said that there was a so-called central coordination mechanism during the 2014
Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong, which proved to be limited in effect as well as
easily to be targeted directly by the government. He believes that instead, this time the resistance movement
has played its biggest role by formed from the bottom up.
"In
the past, it was inevitable for the integrated movement turn into small
pieces. But now it is very
important to be acting in the opposite way of integration into a big goal with
strategy."
On
Tuesday August 13, a number of protesters' platforms in Hong Kong issued
apologies for the protests in the past couple of days which caused
inconvenience to the passengers at the Hong Kong airport and even beatings
there. Leung Kwok-hung said that
it is necessary to apologize for the wrong behavior during the operation.
"In
any case, we should avoid violence and violence against people who have no
resistance. This is not
right."
Many
analysts believe that all mass movements would have problems occurring that are
difficult to control and master.
Wei Jingsheng, the famous Chinese dissident residing in the USA, thinks
that even if there is a lack of central coordination mechanism, peaceful and
rational resistance should be carried under discipline.
"Some
people say that all this activity is spontaneous, which is unorganized and
undisciplined. But even if it is
spontaneous, it should be organized and disciplined. All organizational coordinators must emphasize this
issue. Since they choose
demonstrations to protest, they should adhere to peacefulness and
rationality. Otherwise, it will be
used as an excuse by the Chinese government."
Wei
Jingsheng called on Hong Kong protesters to be cautious and maintain a peaceful
and rational pattern of resistance, not to be influenced by anger. He believes that the young leaders of
the Hong Kong democracy movement need to openly express their sincerity in
peace and try to avoid letting the Chinese government find excuses of direct
intervention.
