It
was an historic moment of encounter: Ai Weiwei, the Chinese artist, met a man
in Passau who was his idol in his youth: Wei Jingsheng, one of the main
political dissidents of the People's Republic of China. In 1994 Wei Jingsheng was awarded the
Olaf Palme Prize and in 1996 the Sakharov Prize of the European Parliament.
Ai
Weiwei was very surprised. He did
not think anyone like Wei would be here.
Said Ai Weiwei. "Wei Jingsheng was the only one who put the issue
of democracy on a public platform in 1978/79, and he has written two very
important articles on "Do we want democracy or dictatorship?" The point is that China's future will
be very unstable if democracy is not allow there, Ai Weiwei explained. "Wei Jingsheng was put in prison
at that time. He is now sitting
here in Germany among us.
Incredible. 40 years ago he
was my idol. We had no contact for
40 years. After this time, I am
able to meet him! In a way, strong
China is so weak that we both had to go to prison and abroad."
Moderator
Claus Strunz recognized the magical moment: "Tonight in Passau is a very
special one and will be a memorial to freedom and human rights."

war ein historischer Moment der Begegnung: Ai Weiwei traf in Passau einen Mann,
der in seiner Jugend sein Ideal war: Wei Jingsheng, einen der bedeutendsten
politischen Dissidenten der Volksrepublik China. 1994 wurde ihm der
Olof-Palme-Preis und 1996 der Sacharow-Preis des Europäischen Parlaments
verliehen.
Er
sei sehr überrascht, glaubte hier niemanden zu kennen, so Ai Weiwei. "Wei
Jingsheng war 1978/79 der Einzige, der die Frage der Demokratie auf eine
öffentliche Plattform gebracht hat. Er hat zwei sehr wichtige Artikel zum Thema
,Wollen wir Demokratie oder Diktatur?‘ geschrieben". Es ging darum, dass
die Zukunft Chinas sehr unstabil verlaufen werde, wenn es keine Demokratie
zulasse, erklart Ai Weiwei. “Wei Jingsheng wurde damals ins Gefangnis gesteckt.
Er sitzt jetzt hier in Deutschland unter uns. Unglaublich. Vor 40 Jahren war er
mein Idol. 40 Jahre hatten wir keinen Kontakt. Ihn nach dieser Zeit treffen zu
konnen! In gewisser Weise ist dam starke China so schwach, dass wir beide ins
Gefangnis und ins Ausland mussten.”
Moderator Claus Strunz erkannte den
magischen Moment: “Der heutige Abend in Passau ist ein ganz besonderer und wird
durch das Treffen zum Denkmal fur Freiheit und Menschenrechte.”
