Observation of the Opposition within the Chinese Communist Party

-- Wei Jingsheng

There has been too much international news recently, and people have overlooked a major event that is very important to us Chinese.  This is Xi Jinping's determination to put Mr. Ren Zhiqiang on trial.  This trial will be a landmark event in China's political life, a strong suppression of the opposition within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), or a watershed in whether Xi Jinping can maintain his dictatorship.

Speaking of the opposition within the CCP, the history is indeed very long.  Starting from the established capitalist leaders Liu Shaoqi and Peng Dehuai, it can be said that it began at the same time as the Chinese Communist Party took power.  The opposition evolved as the democrats moved to the anti-Mao Zedong movement during the Cultural Revolution.  At that time, the Communist regime and Mao Zedong had not rejected the term democracy, because democracy had been the ideal of Chinese intellectuals for nearly one century.  From the perspective of political correctness, Mao Zedong did not dare to offend the public and to engender anger.  He needed to fool the Chinese people to support him against the faction within the Communist leadership who advocated capitalism.

After the faction advocating capitalism within the CCP was overthrown, a group of young people who transformed from Maos loyalists to anti-Maoists gradually leaned towards democracy.  Although the democratic consciousness at that time did not deviate from the Marxist stereotype, their tendency against Leninism dictatorship was quite strong.  So the CCP authorities classified them as active counter-revolutionary organizations that needed to be suppressed.

Interestingly, most of the Rebel groups during the Cultural Revolution were anti-Communism with their red Communism flags, while the Red Guard organizations, which clearly opposed the dictators, were considered as organizations with anti-Communist flags against the Communist leadership.  Mao Zedong and (his wife) Jiang Qing clique were successful in provoking opposition between the rebel groups and the Red Guards, then eliminating them one by one.  This was one of the main ways for the Mao Zedong clique to always control the situation during the Cultural Revolution era.

After the Cultural Revolution, the Rebel groups were completely eliminated, although the Red Guards against dictatorship and Mao Zedong did not end well either.  That is because the anti-Mao Red Guards were mostly children of the Communist Cadres, and there were many daring children of the Communist cadres who were the leaders of the Rebel groups as well.  Although some of these children became members of vested interest groups who got rich first in China, most of them still held strong democratic ideas and were bolder than ordinary intellectuals in China.  Deng Xiaoping maintained a high degree of vigilance against these people.  The famous leadership rule that "only one person from each (Communist leader) family can be an official within the Communist leadership" was proposed by Deng Xiaoping and Chen Yun.

These Red Guard and Rebel leaders were the elites of that generation and gradually moved towards leadership positions in the 1980s and 1990s.  This aroused the high vigilance of the Communist regime.  So the Communist regime used the Hong Kong and Taiwan media they controlled to publicize pedigree theory, and incitements from the second generation of red Communist leaders and princelings were rampant.  Isn't this a repeat of Mao Zedong's old trick of splitting the opposition?  Is it really true that all vested interest groups are the second generation of red Communist leaders?  Are all the opposition members from the families who were suppressed by the Communist regime?  To the least it is a decadent ancient thinking by not dividing people according to their own political stance, but according to where their families descend from.

Are (Communist leaders) Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and Wen Jiabao the children of the Communist cadres?  They are just upholding authoritarian politics in China with Xi Jinping does although Xi upholding even more.  Instead, Ren Zhiqiang, Cai Xia and others who opposed the autocratic dictatorship, were said to be not truly anti-Communism by more sophisticated Communist agents on the Internet.  This is the latest skillful leading for public opinion on the Internet that is called guiding the direction of the wind.   It wants to bring many anti-communist fellows who are not good at thinking into pitfalls.  It continues to instigate the assembly of anti-communism people and to maintain the one-party authoritarian regime.

I have said forty years ago that we should concentrate our pain causing anger toward the reactionary autocracy.  However, the past and present Communist leaders pin their hopes on instigating conflicts within the opposition.  Modern day Communist agents know how to first disguise themselves as anti-communists, and then use this false identity to guide the trend of thoughts and complete their task of controlling public opinion.  Looking at the Internet, you know that the Communist agents that are wasting the money from the Communist regime by simply cursing have been greatly reduced, while the Communist agents who act as anti-communists to curse the democracy movement have greatly increased.  This shows that the Chinese Communist propaganda methods have also evolved with the times.  Our friends who support democracy and freedom should keep their eyes open and discern carefully, instead of falling into the tricks of the Chinese Communist regime that instigate discord.

Our sober-minded friends should be able to see that Xi Jinping's severe crackdown on the opposition within the Communist leadership is exactly the measure he took as he facing the threat of peaceful evolution within the Communist leadership.  The confluence of the civil opposition and the opposition within the Communist leadership is an opportunity for China to evolve peacefully towards democracy.  Let us not follow the trend guided by the modern Communist agents which would destroy the unity of the democrats.  Otherwise we the Chinese will miss another good opportunity for democracy and freedom.
