Wei Jingsheng Lectured
"A Perspective of the Direction of China and the USA”
at the Potomac Cultural Salon
On November 7, 2020, at
the invitation of the Potomac Culture Salon, Mr. Wei Jingsheng gave a lecture
on "A Perspective of the Direction of China and the USA.” The main theme was about the 5th Plenary
Session of the 19th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the
Presidential election in the USA, China & the USA after the US Presidential
election, and the China-USA relations, on which Mr. Wei delivered his
interpretations.
Regarding the Fifth
Plenary Session of the CCP’s 19th Congress, Wei
Jingsheng thinks that there was only one sentence with some substantive
content, which was about peaceful reunification with Taiwan. This cooled the recent CCP’s
clamor for a military reunification of Taiwan.
Regarding the issue of the so-called successor to Xi Jinping, Wei
Jingsheng pointed out that it was not an issue, although some people hope to
change the current "one person’s
dictatorship" into "one party’s
dictatorship." Regarding the
current situation in China, Wei Jingsheng feels not optimistic. Regarding the current control of the
coronavirus spreading in China, Wei Jingsheng thinks that the CCP’s words have never been credible.
Wei Jingsheng thinks
that the biggest challenge in the four-year term after the election of the US
president is from China. He pointed out
that many of Joe Biden's funds come from big businesses, and they hope that
Biden can go back to what Biden and his main aides talked about in the past of
returning to an appeasement policy. But
in fact, Biden does not have that much power to change everything. If he wants to change his China policy, he
will not even get the support of those who support democracy and freedom within
the Democratic Party. But this monetary
influence also reflects the shortcomings of the American system, which have
been in place for more than two hundred years without a correction: the power
of big capital and money far exceeds the power of voters, which may be its
fatal flaw. Yet this influence is not
the same as the CCP’s dictatorship.
Wei Jingsheng criticized
President Trump's early practices of offending allies around the world, but
pointed out that his foreign policy has improved a lot in the past year or two,
especially with Secretary of State Pompeo's efforts. Regarding the withdrawal of the United States
from some international organizations, Wei Jingsheng thinks it is understandable,
because the CCP has made full use of some organizations, and these
organizations have exposed many problems themselves. We must consider what role these
international organizations are really playing.
Wei Jingsheng also analyzed and discussed the relationship between the
United States and Europe and Asia, with an emphasis on the relationship between
the United States and Taiwan, the Hong Kong issue, Xinjiang Uyghur, and
mainland China, etc.
Wei Jingsheng also
talked about the problems of the American media, especially since he himself
has been suppressed by big businesses for more than two decades after opposing
American capitalists going to China to earn money without a conscience, to the
degree that articles he was invited to write were rejected by the top
management. How to protect true freedom
of speech from the monopoly and manipulation of big business is something that
both China and the United States need to consider. Because of different opinions in the general
election, Wei Jingsheng suggested that every Chinese should learn from
Americans and be more tolerant of different opinions and election choices. After all, the United States is still a
democratic system, and we should further promote democratic progress when
possible. Wei Jingsheng thinks that the
United States has not become more conservative, but is only becoming sober
about the CCP and started to make the right decisions.
Finally, Wei Jingsheng
called on the Chinese people to improve their ability to recognize issues and
promote freedom and democracy in China within their capacity. He gave a summary of the eventful 2020 and
made a perspective for China in 2021.

The following is an
introduction of Wei Jingsheng’s lecture by the Potomac
Cultural Salon:
"A Perspective on
the Direction of China and the USA”
The Fifth Plenary
Session of the 19th Congress of the CCP is over. What did they discuss? Little is known to the outside world.
The dust will have
settled in the US presidential election.
What will happen to domestic and foreign policies?
In the next four years,
will the development of US-China relations pick up or continue to decouple?
What measures will the US and Chinese leaders take?
The Potomac Cultural
Salon is honored to invite Mr. Wei Jingsheng, a famous Chinese democracy
activist, to interpret China, the United States and the relationship between
the United States and China.
Wei Jingsheng is a
famous Chinese anti-communist, democrat and social activist. He once published a big-character poster
"The Fifth Modernization" on the Democracy Wall in Xidan, Beijing, to
promote democracy. He was later
imprisoned for “counter-revolutionary”
actions and “conspiracy
to subvert the government”, and was nominated for the
Nobel Peace Prize many times in prison.
After being released from prison, he went into exile in the United
States. Currently, he is the chairman of
the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition and the chairman of the Wei Jingsheng
Foundation.
In 1993, Wei Jingsheng
shared the International Activist Award of the Greitsman Foundation of the
United States with former South African President Nelson Mandela. He received the Olof Palme Memorial Prize
from Sweden in 1994, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Human Rights Award in 1996,
the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought from the European Parliament in 1996
and the National Endowment for Democracy Award in 1998.
