Also Talking about
Conspiracy Theories
-- Wei Jingsheng
The inauguration of the
46th president of the United States is over, and everything should be back to
normal. It is time to talk about other
issues that everyone is concerned about, including a term that has gained popularity
recently, conspiracy theory. The people
who use this term most are people from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),
including those Western scholars and politicians who defend the CCP. This has become a routine method of the CCP's
external propaganda.
In fact, the one that
has the most conspiracies is the CCP itself, which talks about other people's
conspiracy theories. A conspiracy theory
that the CCP has recently made very successful is that the overseas democracy
movement has collapsed, with Trump’s fans and Biden’s fans fighting and hating
each other like passersby. Not only did
the CCP’s secret agents from all walks of life clamor so, but even some active
anti-communist friends who are pursuing democracy also echoed in anxiety, which
made Xi Jinping in Beijing very happy.
Recently, a well-known
sinologist, who has supported the democratic movement for many years, published
an academic article. In it he said that
the overseas Chinese democracy movement has almost collapsed because of its
support for and opposition to Trump. And
he also named so and so and said so and so, with solid evidence that sounds
worrisome.
But he didn't note that
the Americans who support Trump and Americans who support Biden also had a
struggle, even to the point of violently attacking the US Capitol. Did the United States collapse? It seems not.
The first message of the president's inauguration was: unity, unity, and
unity. why? Because they are all Americans, and they all
live under the roof of the United States -- no matter how many different
opinions they have, it would not overwhelm their common interests and basic
values.
The overseas Chinese
democracy movement is the same. Under
the premise of common goals and basic values, no matter how big the differences
are, they still have to unite under the banner of democracy and freedom to
oppose communism. Quarrels are normal,
and unity is needed. Although most of
the members of the overseas Chinese democracy movement are already citizens of
the countries they live in, their concern and dedication to Chinese democracy
and freedom are the common characteristics of this group of people. There is no issue of collapse or not.
Then why are there so
many people who claim to be anti-communist and support democracy, yelling at
each other on Internet, and treating each other like enemies, and even don't
want to share the same sky? Let us not
forget one important thing, that is, the Communist regime grooms a large number
of Internet agents. To make it bluntly,
these agents get paid for what they are doing, for engaging in conspiracies on
the Internet. It is one of their tasks
and the key point is to belittle and split the overseas democracy movement.
These CCP agents have
also kept pace with the times. They know
that their real face of Communist agents is despised and would be beaten by
most people all the time. So they
pretend to speak for democracy in an effort to achieve a much better effect of
deception. Especially for ordinary
people who usually don't care about politics, they are even more
deceptive. Not only have they deceived
the Chinese, but even foreign experts.
In fact, American sinology is nothing more than a career, with no more
need to know China better than the average American. As long as they know a little bit more than
the average American, they can get a position in a university. So it does not require a high level effort
for the CCP’s conspiracy theory to deceive them.
The social psychology of
the Chinese people in modern times has always been to look for a savior. Is President Trump the great savior of the
Chinese? It seems not. His greatest achievement was to change the
appeasement policy of the West and start to crack down on the blood-sucking
trade of the CCP. But looking at the
rising deficit in the US trade with China, we can see that his hesitant trade
war is like a big thunder with little rain, and did not achieve the goal. His lack of concern for human rights is
indeed the external cause of the deterioration of the Chinese human rights
situation in recent years, including the democratic protests in Hong Kong
getting into low tide.
Is there really no hope
for President Biden to get on stage?
Looking at the layout of the Biden team, it doesn't seem to be as scary
as the pessimists think. In Biden’s
White House team, there are fewer leaders from Wall Street than in Trump's
time, and Biden’s diplomatic and defense team has more hardliners against
China. Everyone knows that the CCP
publicly brags that they have many old friends in the U.S. decision-making stratum
who can influence U.S. policies. Even
the American media thinks that Wall Street is the most staunch supporter of the
CCP. The layout of the Biden team does
not seem to be very favorable to the CCP.
Should we blame others,
or should we continue to work hopefully?
This is a question that does not need to be answered. The Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition’s
16th Congress held at the end of last year also showed that differences did not
affect unity. At least in the issue of
anti-communism and fight for democracy, we have no disagreement.
