In Memory of Mr. Jonathan Mirsky

Ten days ago, I saw the news that Mr. Jonathan Mirsky passed away,
which reminded me of some of our interesting past.
Mr. Mirsky’s greatest characteristic was his straightforwardness, so
some people would dislike him. But it is
the same reason that I like him the most.
When I first arrived in the United States in 1998, it was a time
everyone was enthusiastic about me, and no one would refute me in front of
me. But Mr. Mirsky would praise me for
the first second, and then refute me without hesitation the next second, which
made me feel as refreshed as a bite of ice cream. And his expression then was as excited as he
was rebutting the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which made me almost laugh.
Like all Western Sino-experts, he thought that he knew the Communist
regime well. Thus, he believed that Hong Kong was so important to the CCP as it
was, therefore Hong Kong would not change.
He was very confident. I ridiculed
him for not understanding the CCP, and that the economy is not the most important
to the Communist regime. As long as the
Communist regime considers it politically necessary, it would change its policy
towards Hong Kong at any time. He didn't
believe it and shook his head vigorously.
Yet he still wrote my opinion into his interview.
This is the character of an honest and smart reporter. I miss his kind of reporters of which there
are not many now.

十天前在新闻上看见梅兆瓒先生去世的消息，想起一些有趣的往事。
梅先生最大的特点就是直率，因此有人会不喜欢他。这也是我最喜欢他的原因。
1998年我刚到美国，正是所有人都在热捧的时间，没有人会当面反驳我。可是梅先生就会前一秒钟还在赞扬，后一秒钟就毫不犹豫地反驳我，让我感到像吃了一口冰激凌一样的清爽。而且他的表情就像反驳共产党一样激动，让我差点笑了起来。
他像所有西方专家一样自以为很了解共产党。所以他认为香港对中共那么重要，因此香港不会变，他很有信心。我则讥笑他不懂共产党，经济对共产党不是最重要的。只要共产党认为政治上需要，随时会改变对香港的政策。他很不相信，使劲地摇头，但还是把我的看法写进了他的采访。
这就是一个正直和聪明的记者的品德。我很怀念他这样的记者，现在不多了。
