[Democracy Summit] Wei Jingsheng: This is an Anti-totalitarian
"Swearing Summit"

Eighty years ago (on December 7) the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor
triggered the US intervention in the Pacific War. Four years later, World War II ended. Eighty years later, the wave of democracy has
been working step by step in the counterattack of autocracy. China and Russia has jointly accused this US
"Democracy Summit" as a product of the "cold war." How to interpret this summit? Pro-democracy activist Wei Jingsheng has
analyzed for this station that the summit is an anti-communist and
anti-totalitarian alliance, and it is a "swearing summit", which has
made the authoritarian countries extremely nervous.
Wei Jingsheng told this station that after the disintegration of the
Soviet Union after World War II, the free world, headed by the United States
this time with the power of democracy, is forming a clear-cut alliance so it is
of great social significance.
Wei Jingsheng: The White House government in convening this global
Democracy Summit, in fact, is forming an alliance against autocratic countries,
as besides the Chinese Communist regime, there are a few more ultra-autocratic
countries, such as Iran and North Korea.
There are 110 countries from around the world that were invited and have
participated in this summit. Of course,
the authoritarian countries were not invited.
This is actually forming a democratic alliance, so it is a very
important thing. Of course, the Chinese
government is very upset. It boasts that
it is one country challenging 110 countries, which sounded even more powerful
than the tone of Empress Dowager Cixi (of the Qing Dynasty) back then.
In response to the suppression of press freedom by authoritarian
countries, Wei Jingsheng stated that the global Democracy Summit is at the
right time to defend press freedom and protect the freedom for reporters. To practice democracy, journalists are on the
front line. The Western world must first
say no to the persecution of journalists.
New York political commentator Wang Juntao said that the world summits
convened by the United States in the past mainly discussed issues that the
whole world faces. This global Democracy
Summit has a clear stand. It is the
first time that the United States, as a world leader after World War II, has
called democratic countries to fight against autocratic countries. Washington will not only form public opinion,
but also have something to follow.
Wang Juntao: At this summit, it is not just a matter of a public
opinion war, but also it should take some practical measures to combat
authoritarian forces. It is needed to
promote the "Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act"
globally, and to ask everyone and democratic countries to do this
together. It is needed to block corrupt
human rights officials worldwide, freeze their bank accounts, and prevent them
from entering the world democratic camp.
This is because we all know that when we only fight public opinion, even
though it is the main thing, its immediate effect is relatively limited. However, if we include sanctions, it will
have an immediate effect. And you can
see from it that the containment of China has risen to the same level as was
the case for the former Soviet Union.
At this Democracy Summit, Bay Fang, president of Radio Free Asia, was
invited to give a speech at the opening ceremony of Day Zero. Bay Fang said that reporters of this station
only want to report without threats, but the (authoritarian) governments use various
methods to prevent reporters from delivering facts to the public. She said that to ensure freedom of the press
and media is to help people of all countries make decisions for themselves. The authoritarian rulers use the law as a
weapon to target reporters on this station.
She is very concerned about the Chinese Communists' threats to RFA’s
Uyghur journalists stationed in the United States because their relatives have
been imprisoned in Xinjiang, "disappeared" and harassed by the
authorities.
Wei Jingsheng: Global authoritarianism and government coercive policies
are in resurgence. This year, the
world's oppression of journalists is one of the highest in history. The democrats should resist this resurgence
of authoritarianism. From reporters' perspective,
the global Democracy Summit is very important and at good timing. Since World War II, the trend of democracy
has become higher and higher, yet in recent years it seems to have declined a
bit. This trend is very detrimental to
all mankind all over the world, so holding a global democracy summit at this
window should be very helpful for the resurgence of democracy and the renewal
of democracy to a new climax.

receive unfiltered information against false information provided by local
governments.

80年前（12月7日）日本偷襲珍珠港，引發了美國介入太平洋戰爭，4年之後，二次世界大戰結束。80年過去，民主的浪潮在專制的反撲之中，步步為營。中俄兩國聯手指責這次美國的「民主峰會」是「冷戰」的產品。如何解讀這次峰會？民運人士魏京生對本台分析，峰會就是反共產主義、反極權專制的聯盟，就是一次「誓師大會」，為此專制國家亦極為緊張。
民運人士魏京生對本台說，二戰之後蘇聯解體後，以美國為首的自由世界，這次以民主之力，就是要組成的一個立場鮮明的聯盟，因此社會意義非常重大。
魏京生：白宮政府召開全球民主峰會，實際上就是在結成一個反對專制國家的聯盟，因為現在極端專制國家，除了中共，可能還有伊朗、北朝鮮少數那麼幾個國家。全球110個國家都參加了這個峰會，都被邀請了，當然這幾個專制的國家沒有被邀請，這個實際上就在組成一個民主的聯盟，所以這是一件很重要的事情。當然中國政府很不高興了，跳著腳吹牛說甚麼，一個國家挑戰110個國家，這比當年慈禧太后的口氣，還要厲害。
針對專制國家對新聞自由的打壓，魏京生表示「全球民主峰會」對捍衛新聞自由，保護自由記者來的正是時候，實踐民主，新聞記者衝鋒在前，西方世界首先要對迫害新聞記者說不。
紐約政論人士王軍濤則說，以往美國召集的世界峰會，主要是談全球共同面對的問題。這次全球民主峰會旗幟鮮明，是美國二戰之後第一次作為世界領袖，召集民主國家去對抗專制國家，華府不光要形成輿論，還要有後著。
王軍濤：在這個峰會上，不僅僅是一個輿論戰的問題，而且他要採取些切實的措施，來打擊專制勢力。全球推廣《馬格尼茨基人權問責法案》，要求民主國家，大家一起來做這件事，要求民主國家大家一起來做這件事。在全球範圍內封殺腐敗和侵犯人權的官員，凍結他們的賬戶，不許他們進入到世界民主陣營中來。因為我們都知道，光打輿論戰的話，當然都說攻心為主，但攻心戰即時的效果比較有限，但如果把制裁的手段，放進去，那會產生即時的效果。而且你從這可以看出，把中國的這種圍堵已經上升到跟前蘇聯一樣。
這次民主峰會，自由亞洲電台總裁Bay Fang在零日（Day Zero）開幕式上受邀致詞。Bay
Fang表示，本台記者只想不受威脅進行報道，但（專制）政府用各種手段，不讓記者事實傳達給民眾。她說，確保新聞自由與媒體自由，就是要幫助各國人民，為自己決策作出決定。專制當局則法律作為武器，針對本台的記者。她非常關注中共對本台駐美維吾爾族記者的威脅，因為其親屬被囚在新疆，「被失蹤」以及遭受當局騷擾。
魏京生：全球專制主義和政府的強迫政策正在回潮。今年一年來，全世界對記者的壓迫，是歷年來最高的一次。民主要抵制這種專制主義的回潮。從記者角度，「全球民主峰會」非常及時的，非常重要。從二戰以後民主潮流越來越高漲，最近幾年好像有點回潮衰落了。這個趨勢對全世界全人類都是很不利的，所以在這個檔口召開一個全球民主峰會，對民主的回潮，對民主從新走入新的高潮，應該是很有幫助的。
