Wei Jingsheng Speaks at
the Tibet Book Club
In the evening on
Friday, March 26, 2021, Wei Jingsheng was invited to speak to more than a dozen
people at the Tibet Book Club about his world renown essay from 1978 “The Fifth
Modernization – Democracy”, as well as his book “The Courage to Stand Alone –
letters from the prisons”. People from
Washington DC metro area, as well as other places include Taiwan, Spain, etc.
participated.
Mr. Wei talked about the
background situation and the political circumstances related to his 1978 essay,
as well as his book of letters written in prisons, first ones on toilet
papers. In particular, he talked about
his experience and sentiment for Tibet, including his letters to the Chinese
Communist leaders urging them to stop atrocities against Tibetans. Many questions were asked after Mr. Wei’s
talk related to culture and traditional aspects of Tibet and Tibetan
Buddhism. In particular, the discussion
of Tibet’s current political and religious state, including its relationship
with Mainland China, USA, and the rest of the world.
The Tibet Book Club is a
forum for young Tibetan professionals in the Washington DC area, who meet once
a month to discuss a Tibet-related book.
It was started in 2011 for conversations on books and the exchange of ideas. They pick a Book of the Month at their
meetings and usually meet the last Friday of the month.
The mission of the Tibet
Book Club is to broaden cultural, historical and literary experience by reading
and discussing books on Tibet and books written by Tibetan writers. It presents creative ways to broaden
understanding of the world while providing a valuable source of knowledge and
exchange of ideas.

2021年3月26日,星期五晚上,魏京生应邀在向参加西藏读书俱乐部活动的十多人进行了演讲,讲述了他在1978年发表的世界闻名的文章《第五个现代化 -- 民主》以及他的著作《单打独立的勇气 -- 魏京生狱中书信集”。来自华盛顿大都会区以及台湾,西班牙等地的人们参加了这次活动。
