Is the Situation in Afghanistan Related to Taiwan?
-- Wei Jingsheng
Is the situation in Afghanistan related to Taiwan? The recent collapse of the Afghanistan
government has aroused many discussions about Taiwan. In particular, the Chinese Communist media
took the opportunity to hype, saying that the United States is unreliable, and
Taiwan should surrender earlier. There
is an old saying: Shouldn’t we stop farming, when we
hear the singing of the Gryllotalpa?
That's what it means. After careful
analysis, it cannot be said that it is completely irrelevant.
With the all-round support of the United States, the Afghan government
gave up the responsibility that a normal government should take for
itself. Corruption reached its peak and
was spurned by the people. In ancient
China, this kind of government would also meet this kind of end, as it would
collapse when it met any enemy, just like the last years of the Ming Dynasty. The United States has sacrificed a lot of
money and lives for such a regime. It is
really not worth it. The American people
have long lost their patience.
Therefore, both the Trump and Biden administrations were determined to
end this absurdity where its gain is not worth the loss.
From the perspective of the Afghans, it is indeed like being abandoned
by the United States. Especially for the
urban middle class in Afghanistan, they are really unwilling to suddenly return
to a dark rule of Islamism after the modern life under the protection of the
United States. If they are allowed to
choose, of course they must choose a modern life under the rule of law and
freedom. Even if they believe in Islam,
they are unwilling to return to the dark rule of extremism they have
experienced long ago. The issue is that
when the people of a country place all their hopes on the shoulders of others,
will others be willing to take responsibility for their irresponsibility?
Now this is related to Taiwan. I
remember that I criticized Taiwan even 20 years ago, as its whole society was permeated
with a mentality of appeasement.
Everyone was saying not to offend the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),
otherwise it will do so and so. It was
the same as the poem describe the Southern Song Dynasty, "the warm wind
blew visitors drunk, and they mistook Hangzhou as Bianzhou." (Almost 900 years ago, Bianzhou was the
capital of the Northern Song Dynasty until it was forced to relocate the
capitol southward to Hangzhou as a temporary measure after suffering attacks of
the XiXia and Liao Dynasty from the north.)
If one doesn’t cultivate the spirit of
resolutely resisting aggression, and if one takes courting the enemy as a
self-protection strategy, the ending will be the same as for the Southern Song
Dynasty, and the rest is just a matter of time.
When facing a powerful enemy, the strategy of self-protection should be
on one hand to not stimulate the tiger and try to let it sleep a little longer,
while on the other hand, actively prepare in case of war and strengthen
self-defense ability. In particular, one
must maintain a high level of vigilance and not pin one’s
hopes on tigers not eating people.
Israel has done a good job in this regard. All its people are soldiers, with highly
vigilance and always maintaining combat effectiveness in order to deal with
unpredictable enemies and emergencies.
Therefore, it has been able to defeat powerful enemies many times and
protect its right to survive.
So did the Song Dynasty really lack strong armed forces? It seems not so as stated in the Chinese
drama. Its armed forces were no less
than its enemies, the Liao Dynasty and XiXia, and there were many outstanding
generals like Yue Fei. However, its
public opinion was that “the warm wind blows visitors
drunk”, which supported Qin Kuai and Fan Zhongyan's theory
of using money in exchange for security, and did not support resistance. The result was its step-by-step walk towards
the destruction. It did not decline
economically even at its extinction, and it still retained a large and advanced
military force at the end. The public
opinion and national will of appeasement were the fundamental reason for the
country's subjugation.
Since the two Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administrations,
Taiwan has greatly corrected this kind of public opinion environment that would
be enough to lead to subjugation. In
particular, Xi Jinping's misconduct in Hong Kong awakened most of the people in
Taiwan. Resisting the CCP's infiltration
and bullying in all aspects has won the support of the overwhelming majority of
the people. There is not much market
for appeasement, and it can no longer formulate public opinion. This is a prerequisite for Taiwan to protect
itself.
President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken spoke of the truth: Any
country’s foreign policy must consider its own gains
and losses. It is a good quality to take
a sacrifice as a hero. However, to
forget one's main enemy because of minor issues, is called being stupid. Focusing on the main enemy, the CCP, is the
correct choice of the last two US administrations. Without the CCP, those little accomplices
would not be able to last for too many days.
So I hope that Chinese society will not be blinded by the CCP's
gloat. It is necessary to support Trump
and Biden's correct choice and concentrate their efforts against the evil
regime of the CCP.
