Wei Jingsheng Speaking at the Dr. Li Jinjin’s Memorial

On April 14, 2022, a full month after lawyer Li Jinjin was assassinated, all sectors of the Chinese democracy movement held a memorial service simultaneously in New York and on the Internet. The memorial service was chaired by Dr. Wang Dan and attended by nearly 100 people. The following is a brief of Mr. Wei Jingsheng’s speech:

Hello everyone!

Wang Juntao, Gao Guangjun, Professor Andrew Nathan worked together with Li Jinjin for a long time. They knew each other well and just explained it in detail, so I won't repeat it. I only want to make two points.

The first is that after Li Jinjin was assassinated, a lot of the Internet agents for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) poured dirty water on him, saying that political asylum lawyers eat “human blood stained buns”, and even some more vicious sayings. There are very few Chinese people who have not been persecuted by the CCP. They yearn for freedom and run to the United States to seek refuge. There is nothing wrong with that. However, the United States has its own laws and procedures, and lawyers help them write petitions to comply with the requirements of American law, which is reasonable and legal. Even if they have not necessarily participated in anti-communist activities in China, they have participated in pro-democracy activities abroad, which is also in line with the requirements of American law. And these anti-communist activities are also troubles for the CCP. Is there anything wrong with it? Li Jinjin and the asylum lawyers are doing good deeds for their compatriots and helping them. Other exile groups in overseas countries are doing the same thing； why shouldn't the Chinese do it? How could it be said as eating “human blood stained buns”? This is pure dirty water.

The second is that some people criticize Li Jinjin for covering up corrupt Chinese officials. Wang Juntao and Li Jinjin asked me about this several years ago: some CCP officials who have fled China need asylum, can we help them? I said yes. The reality in China is that there are no officials who are not corrupted. Otherwise, they would not last. Now that they are persecuted or awakened and thus they want to fight back, we should accept them. They are helpful to the anti-communist democratic cause, why should we reject them? It is our duty and to unite all the people of insight including those within the Communist Party to build a democratic and free China. The work of Li Jinjin and other human rights lawyers is part of the work of the pro-democracy movement. So I supported their work even many years ago.

魏京生先生在李进进博士纪念会上的发言

2022年4月14日，李进进律师被杀害的整整一个月的日子，中国民运各界在纽约及互联网上同步举办追思会。追思会由王丹博士主持，近百人参加。以下为魏京生先生的讲话简要：

大家好！

王军涛、高光俊、黎安友先生和李进进先生长期合作，比较了解，刚刚讲得比较详细，我就不重复了。我只讲两点。

第一：李进进被害之后，有不少五毛往他身上泼脏水，说什么政庇律师吃人血馒头，甚至有更恶毒的说法。中国人很少没受过共产党迫害的，他们向往自由跑到美国来避难，没有什么错误。但美国有自己的法律和程序，律师帮他们写状纸，使之符合美国法律的要求，合情合理合法。即使他们在国内不一定参加过反共的活动，但在国外参加了民运活动，也符合美国法律的要求。而且这些反共的活动，也是中共的麻烦，有什么不好吗？李进进和政庇律师们是在为同胞做好事，在帮助他们。海外各国的流亡团体都在做同样的事，为什么中国人不能做？怎么说吃人血馒头呢？这是纯粹的泼脏水。

第二：有人批评李进进包庇贪官污吏。这件事几年前王军涛和李进进问过我：有些逃亡的前官员做身份，是否可以帮他们？我说可以。中国的现实是无官不贪，不贪你在官场根本混不下去。现在他们受到迫害或者觉悟了，想反戈一击，我们应该接纳他们。他们对反共的民主事业有帮助，我们为什么要拒绝他们呢？联合一切共产党内的有识之士，建立民主自由的中国，是我们应该做而且必须做的份内事。李进进和其他人权律师的工作，是民运工作的一部分。所以多年前我就支持他们的工作。
