Topic: Mr. WEI gave invited speech in Atlanta and met with local leaders

The distinguished Chinese dissident and human rights activist Mr. WEI Jingsheng was in Atlanta the past weekend for a series of activities and gave a speech there on March 9 for an event organized by The Global Alliance for Democracy and Peace (GADP), an organization of overseas Chinese mainly from Taiwan.  Wei is the chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition and the president of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation.

After Mr. Wei arrived in Atlanta on Thursday, March 7, he had dinner with nearly a dozen of the local Chinese leaders and friends who care about the relationship across the Taiwan Straits.  He spent time with democracy activists for the rest of the night until nearly 4 AM the next morning to discuss the future of China and the strategy of Chinese democracy.

On March 8, accompanied by the head of the Atlanta Chapter of GADP, Dr. Ho, and other friends, Mr. Wei visited the well-known Stone Mountain in Atlanta.  The chapter arranged a wonderful dinner for Mr. Wei that evening with nearly twenty local leaders and friends.

In the morning of March 9, Mr. Wei gave more than an hour interview to the New Chinese television station.  He provided his opinions on a wide range of topics.

In that afternoon, Mr. Wei gave the invited speech organized by GADP.  More than one hundred people attended the event and listened to Mr. Wei's speech.  The event had a co-speaker, Dr. WU Her-Yee, founder of a Washington DC based strategic think tank company and Chairman of the Board of Directors of GADP.

The topic of Mr. Wei's speech was "Peace, Democracy and the relationship between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits". In his speech, Mr. Wei pointed out that it is very important to maintain the peace between Mainland China and Taiwan. However, what is more important is that the 23 million people in Taiwan do not want to live under the Communist government' rule. The so-called "One country, Two systems" of the Communist government on Mainland China is not trustable. That government itself is a dictatorship.

Talking about independence, Mr. Wei said, it is a fact that Taiwan is an independent state, called the Republic of China (ROC) that was founded in 1911. Due to the historic fight with Communism, the government moved to Taiwan in 1949. The governing territory of ROC changed. However, it is still an independent state. Since the late forties, the land of Taiwan has never been governed by another country. True, currently, ROC is not recognized as a country by many other countries. But that is the other countries' issue and cannot change the fact that ROC is independent. People from Taiwan themselves should not think Taiwan is not an independent country.

To gain the peace and freedom of the 23 million people in Taiwan, Mr. Wei said, the best way is to maintain the status quo. The discussion about reunification versus independence is an unrealistic topic and it is useless to talk about it now. Only when Mainland China is under a truly democratic government, people can really talk about whether Taiwan should be reunified with Mainland China or remain separate.

This brings up the topic of democracy. The realization of democracy in Mainland China will not only benefit people on the Mainland, but will benefit people in Taiwan as well. Only when Mainland China is not under the dictatorship, only when the government in Mainland China becomes a reasonable, democratic government and follows the rules of international society, people in Taiwan can be free of the threat of war. From that point of view, Democracy in Mainland China is very important for the people in Taiwan. Therefore, Mr. Wei appeals to the people in Taiwan as well as Overseas Chinese from Taiwan to treat the Chinese democracy movement as their own cause.

After Mr. Wei, Dr. WU Her-Yee also gave a speech. After the speech, Mr. Wei and Dr. Wu answered questions from the audience for nearly one hour.

Topic: Mr. WEI gave invited speech in Atlanta and met with local leaders
